Minding the Gap Inc. in support of Bleeding Blue’s mental health provider network, present:
A training to help mental health clinicians improve cultural competence when treating first responders. It covers trauma-informed strategies to reduce professional stress for first responders and their families, using lectures, resources, and experiential exercises.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Apply trauma informed theories and practices for diagnosing and treating first responders.
Identify healthy coping skills and wellness practices that will reduce the impact stress has on daily living and functioning. first responders and their families.
Recognize ways to respond to acute stress and crisis intervention with first responders.
Utilize grounding techniques and body awareness after discomfort in simulated exposure to first responder work experiences.
Apply knowledge and awareness of daily functioning, limitations and accessibility to services by first responders when initiating services and building rapport.
Demonstrate awareness of interaction patterns, concerns, and effects of first responder subgroups known as first responder culture..
Apply career/life planning as well as assess for life-work transitions that affect functioning and will be able to explore resources that will assist first responders in navigating through life-work challenges.
Utilize understanding of the workplace environment when providing career development and resources to first responders to prevent burn out and address compassion fatigue and moral injury.
Administer diagnostic tools using trauma informed strategies and diagnostic interviewing while differentiating between complex trauma and single incident traumatic stress symptoms for PTSD as identified in DSM-V.
Develop culturally competent treatment goals and objectives when working with first responders and their families.
Demonstrate knowledge and access to information and resources that promote culturally competent wellness and prevention to first responders in their community.
*This course will meet the learning requirement to join Bleeding Blue’s Mental Health Provider Network. An eight-hour ride along with a local fire or police department following this training is also required to join the provider network. Visit www.bleedingblue.info for more information.
